Jorge Lorenzo must have thought the worst was behind him.
Having made MotoGP medical history at Assen, where he raced
(to fifth place) just two days after breaking his collarbone, the Yamaha rider
expected an easier time in Germany.
When Lorenzo then set the pace in morning practice at the
Sachsenring the nine point gap to Championship leader Dani Pedrosa looked more
slender than ever.
But Lorenzo’s weekend, and perhaps title hopes, literally
came crashing down when he was tossed violently from his M1 motorcycle early in
the afternoon practice.
The Spaniard, 26, landed hard on the same shoulder he had
broken two weeks ago, damaging the titanium plate that was inserted to hold his
collarbone in place.
Surgery will again be required and, this time, there will be
no shock comeback for the race.
Before returning to Barcelona, Lorenzo said: “I have decided
to go home and recover after today's crash at Sachsenring. I prefer to focus on
surgery to fix the plate that was unfortunately bent during the crash. I will
try to recover and be back as soon as possible."
With Lorenzo’s fitness in doubt for the US Grand Prix at
Laguna Seca next weekend, the reigning double Champion could lose 50 more
points to Pedrosa.
