Sebastian Vettel may already be
World Champion but there was no lifting off at Abu Dhabi on Sunday, where the
German crushed the opposition for a seventh victory in succession.
That equals the record of
compatriot Michael Schumacher, with only 1950s legend Alberto Ascari still
ahead, with nine in a row.
“It’s a shock when you mention
[Schumacher and Ascari],” said Vettel. “The thing is that people see seven
races. People don’t see the challenge it takes every single race to nail it.
It’s been exceptional. The fact that we got everything right: smooth pitstops;
reliability. All these things need to come together.
“The numbers are not that
important to me but equally they make me very, very proud. It you equal
something or you’re close to something then… the guys you talk about are the
most special drivers in the world in Formula One.”
Newly crowned four time title
winner Vettel won his eleventh race of the season by over 30 seconds, beating Red
Bull team-mate and pole sitter Mark Webber into turn one and never looking back.
Webber and Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)
joined him on the podium, before which Vettel again thrilled the fans with some
post-race donuts, this time without punishment from the FIA.
“This time I bought the car back to
parc ferme so it’s fine. I was just happy.
It’s a sort of stadium there. It’s really nice, people all around you. I think
they loved it.”
Two more races, in Texas and
Brazil, remain before the end of the season.
