The Sochi F1 circuit being built in Russia is ‘working on the possibility’ of running MotoGP and World Superbike events.

The new circuit is being built within the grounds of the 2014 Winter Olympics venue and is due to hold its first F1 grand prix that same year.

But upon giving an update of the circuit’s progress, CEO Alexander Bogdanov revealed that World Championship motorcycle racing is also on the agenda.

Bogdanov said: "The construction of the racing track in Sochi is going into high gear.

“The 5854m long circuit is one of the longest in the Formula One World Championship. The autodrome will also host different racing series such as FIA GT World Series, FIA WEC, WTCC, Formula 3, and Russian national championships.

“We are working through the possibility of hosting motorcycle racing of the highest level: MotoGP, World Superbike and others.”

Whilst motorcycle racing requires different safety considerations - neither MotoGP nor WSBK race on street circuits for example - Sochi designer Hermann Tilke believes the new venue could join an elite group of tracks that host both two and four-wheel grand prix racing.

Tilke said: “There is no doubt that the circuit will be meeting all the requirements for Formula One and maybe also for the MotoGP. The circuit is going to be very fast and technical and offering a number of interesting features.

“It is a fantastic facility with a great atmosphere and it will be outstanding as the circuit will run through the Olympic Park. I am very optimistic about the future of the unique race track in Sochi and am looking forward to a triumphant start of Formula 1 in Russia."

F1 cars are expected to reach a maximum speed of 321 km/h around the 18-turn Sochi circuit, with an average speed of 215 km/h.

Russia joins the likes of Argentina and India in seeking to join the MotoGP calendar. Austin, Texas will be the only new event for 2013.
