2013 MotoGP rookie Bradley Smith is
to make an early 1000cc Yamaha race debut at Qatar next weekend.
But Smith won’t be riding the YZR-M1
with which he will take part in his first premier-class grand prix at the same
Losail circuit on April 7.
Instead the Englishman, 22, is to
race an R1 Superbike in the second round of the QMMF Qatar International Championship.
Smith’s race entry will conclude a
busy tour of the Middle East, which begins this weekend at the Bahrain
International Circuit, where he will assist up-and-coming racers in a series of
track sessions.
Smith then moves on to the Yas
Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, followed by Dubai, for further practice days with
local riders.
The QMMF race weekend begins with
practice and qualifying next Friday, then two 15 lap championship races
organised on the Saturday.
Smith said: “I’m so looking
forward to this trip - helping up and coming riders, riding new circuits which
I’ve only seen on the television and to be honest enjoying a bit of sunshine.
“I’ve been pushing really hard to
make this happen. Of course it’s great preparation for me before MotoGP testing
gets underway in Sepang, but also I’m certain there is some real racing talent
in that part of the world.
“I end the trip with a couple of
races in Qatar and it will be interesting to see just how the riders have
improved actually racing against them.”
Smith’s first MotoGP test of 2013
will start at Sepang, Malaysia on February 5.
