Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo returned to the top
step of the podium for the first time since June after a daring last-lap
victory over title leader Marc Marquez in the British Grand Prix.
But it was Marquez who amazed the record 75,000 Silverstone
fans most, dislocating his shoulder in morning warm-up but still battling to
the death for what would have been his fifth victory in a row.
The 20-year-old briefly seized the lead on lap 18 of 20,
then made a final attack by diving under Lorenzo with just a few corners to go.
It worked, but Marquez drifted slightly wide at the
penultimate turn and Lorenzo was able to slice back underneath to revive his
and Yamaha’s flagging title hopes.
Lorenzo said: “When Marc overtook me three corners from the
end I thought it was over again and second place, but then he opened a little
gap so I thought 'now or never'. I tried and got it!
“This was one of the best races I've ever had. It's a very
important win.”
But given the circumstances Marquez was surely man of day.
“This morning when my shoulder popped out I thought that my
weekend was over, but the doctors were able to put it back in place quickly and
that allowed me to be up there at the front, fighting with Jorge,” he said.
“I didn't feel much pain because I received an injection,
but I was lacking strength and feeling tired by the end. Despite this, I was able to battle all the way
until the final corner with Jorge.
“For me these 20 points are like a win!”
Marquez’s Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa completed the
leading group for much of the race, but was never able to pass either rider
ahead of him. Pedrosa has now slipped 30 points from Marquez in the
Championship standings.
Lorenzo has gained five points on Marquez, but is still 39
point adrift with six rounds to go.
