Sebastian Vettel is on the brink of a fourth successive F1
World Championship victory after victory in Sunday’s Korean Grand Prix.
The Red Bull star’s eighth win of the season - and fourth in
a row - has allowed him to build a 77 point advantage with five rounds remaining.
If Vettel can increase that lead to 100 points over lone
remaining rival Fernando Alonso at Suzuka next weekend, he will crowned
Champion with a further four rounds to go.
That would require some ill-fortune for Alonso, but the
eventual destination of the 2013 title is now surely beyond doubt.
“I’m trying not to think about it to be honest,” insisted
Vettel. “I’m trying to focus more on the present. There are still a lot of
points to get, even though it looks very good for us. There’s still a chance
for Fernando, so we have to stay on top of our game but to be honest, I think I
said on the podium, we’re just having a good time.
“So even though it looks very good, it’s still not over so
we shouldn’t feel too comfortable. Japan is one of the highlights in the year,
but regarding the championship I think our target is to win and not to win it
in one place in particular.”
Two safety car periods, the second due to a fire for
team-mate Mark Webber, interrupted the Korean race, which finished with Vettel
4.2s ahead of battling Lotus team-mates Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean.
Vettel, who led every lap, admitted the race may have been
closer without the safety car periods with tyre wear again a major factor.
“Yeah, I think it would have been close without the safety
car,” commented Vettel. “Maybe in terms of raw pace we were a little bit
quicker, but in terms of range, the Lotus was again very strong.”
