Reigning MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo saw his 2013 title
charge brought to a painful halt by a collarbone-breaking crash at Assen on
Thursday.
After leading dry morning practice for the Dutch TT, which due
to tradition is a Saturday race, the Spaniard was launched from his Yamaha at over
200km/h in the wet afternoon session.
Nursing his left arm when he stood up, medical checks later confirmed
a collarbone fracture.
Due to the high-speed of the accident, Lorenzo will remain
in observation for the next 24 hours to rule out any further injuries before
undergoing shoulder surgery in Barcelona.
Dr. Xavier Mir, who will carry out that operation, was
present in Assen in his role as MotoGP Team Medical Doctor.
“Jorge has a high inertia trauma but results are normal from
initial neurological examination,” he said. “We will move to Assen to make head
and chest scans and also an abdominal exploration.
“Our first diagnosis revealed that there is a left clavicle
fracture with a slight shift that will need surgery to repair the bone. This
injury is in the background while we rule out any other major injury that may
become apparent within 24 hours.
“These kind of impacts at more than 200 km/h need some time
for the body to recover to be able to discard any other major injuries. In
principle tomorrow [Friday] he can travel and within 48 hours he will be
operable.”
Lorenzo has won three races this season - more than any
other rider and including the last two races in a row - to cut Dani Pedrosa’s
Championship lead to just seven points. Lorenzo will aim to return for the
German Grand Prix, from July 12-14.
