Dani Pedrosa thrilled his home fans by blasting to a
record-breaking home pole position in Catalunya on Saturday.
Preparing for his 200th grand prix, Pedrosa was
untouchable in the baking Spanish sunshine, finishing the 15-minute Q2 shootout
with a massive 0.6s advantage over nearest rival Cal Crutchlow.
Pedrosa, who leads the World Championship by 12 points over
countryman Jorge Lorenzo, said:
“It’s a special one for sure. We put in a great lap and took
a great qualifying time. It was a fantastic pole position for me. We also broke
the circuit record and were able to do so in front of the home fans.
“I am also happy about improving our race pace, as this is
the most important thing. We hope to put on a good show tomorrow and take full
advantage of the front row start."
Joining Pedrosa and Crutchlow (Tech 3 Yamaha) on the front
row will be reigning champion Lorenzo.
The Factory Yamaha star suffered a fall in morning practice
and then a clutch problem at the start of qualifying, forcing a change to his
spare bike.
“I didn’t expect to finish six tenths behind pole but Dani
did an incredible lap. Close to perfection. And we had this problem in the
clutch so I only had two fast laps and
I didn't feel s good
with the spare bike.
“But anyway pole position was impossible today and second or
third doesn't matter so much.”
Looking ahead to the race, Lorenzo added: “The weather is so
hot and the time difference between one fast lap and race pace is so big.
“So the riders that are the most consistent and mentally
hard over a long distance will have a big advantage. We hope to be one of those
guys.”
