Sebastian Vettel strengthened his hold on the 2013 F1 World
Championship by driving almost unchallenged to a third win of the season in
Canada on Sunday.
But the victory was marred by the death of a marshal, who
fell under the wheels of a crane being used to remove the crashed Sauber of Esteban Gutierrez late in the race.
“The worker was
helping to recover a car which had stopped during the race,” confirmed an FIA
statement
“The recovery vehicle had lifted the car to return it to the
pits and while doing this the worker dropped his radio and attempted to pick it
up. As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery
vehicle.
“Unfortunately, the worker succumbed to his injuries.”
Gutierrez had crashed on lap 64 of 70, with pole sitter
Vettel winning by almost 15-seconds over Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.
Red Bull star Vettel only briefly relinquished the lead - during
his first pit stop - and is now 36-points clear of nearest rival Alonso in his
pursuit of a fourth successive crown.
Vettel’s 29th win was also his first in Canada.
“A very important race for us to win. Finally we get it off
the list! Very proud of that. We’ve had good races here before but it didn’t
come together for a win. Two years ago I was very close. I lost it in the last
lap, it was my mistake, so made up for it today. Great feeling.
“Also a great car today by the team and I think we were able
to really pull away from the rest of the field, which was most important to
then control the race. I could really enjoy every single lap."
Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third place for
Mercedes.
